We are excited to announce that the Maine Youth Environmental Leader Scholarship for 2026-2027 at Maine Coast Semester is now accepting applications!
Do you know a high school sophomore who is passionate about the environment and looking for opportunities to engage more deeply?

This season, your generosity goes further. Gifts of $1,000+ are matched, and 500 gifts unlock an additional $100,000.

For more than a century, Chewonki has explored what it means to live thoughtfully on the land. In the late 1990s, that exploration took physical form with the construction of the Center for Environmental Education, a building designed not just to house programs, but to make energy, materials, and systems visible. Around the same time, experiments began appearing across campus, from student-built solar panels to biodiesel production and early wind and hydrogen systems. Some of those efforts evolved or faded as technology changed, while others laid the groundwork for what came next. Together, they shaped a campus where sustainability is something you can see, question, and take part in every day.

A community effort worth celebrating

Greetings from Chewonki and happy new year!
This is the quietest and darkest time of year on Chewonki Neck, just a few days past the winter solstice. For those of you from the “lower latitudes,” our planetary tilt has a remarkable effect on the environment here in Wiscasset, granting us only eight and a half hours of sunlight each day.

For Bill and Emily, giving to Chewonki isn’t just about one organization — it’s about giving back to the Maine community that has shaped their lives. From Gardiner to Camden to Brunswick, they’ve spent their years building things that last: homes, friendships, and a sense of belonging. Supporting Chewonki through planned giving is one more way to sustain the strength and continuity of a community they deeply value.

We are pleased to announce the appointment of Kerianne Gwinnell as the new Director of the Center for Environmental Education at Chewonki! Kerianne joined us last year to lead our Traveling Natural History programs before stepping into this new role.

For more than a century, natural history has been at the heart of Chewonki. For the last two decades, Fred Cichocki—known to generations simply as Doc Fred—has been one of its most faithful partners.

At Chewonki, learning and sustainability are deeply intertwined. Every experience—from farm chores to field studies to nights under the stars—invites participants to see how their choices ripple through the natural world. Now, we’re taking that understanding further through beneficial electrification—a key step in our long-term plan to decarbonize campus operations and model real-world climate solutions.
August 21-23, 2026. Join us at Chewonki for a fun-fulled weekend of connection and activities. Cabins and camping available.
