We are terribly sad to share the news that Bill Edgerton, long-time Chewonki Kitchen Manager, passed away peacefully in his sleep on February 26, 2022.

For more than 15 years Bill brought his good humor, wit, kindness, and excellent cooking to organization, sharing food facts and delicious meals with many thousands of campers, students, and staff, and we will miss him deeply at Chewonki. Bill saw us through some of the hardest moments of the pandemic, turning his talents and energies to providing meals for the Midcoast Hunger Prevention Program, and finally retiring in December of 2020.

The Boothbay Register has published a complete obituary for Bill, and interested parties are invited to leave comments or share memories with the family on this tribute page.

Bill’s career in the kitchen took him far beyond the bounds of cooking, and for many people here at Chewonki he was also a friend, mentor, teacher, and guide. Among the endless comments we have received from parents over the years, a common theme has always stood out: “My child came home loving vegetables! How did you do that?”

Thank you Bill.

Bill is survived by his mother Betsy Edgerton of Harpswell; his sister Louisa Edgerton of Bath; his brother Jonathan Edgerton and wife Stacy of Bowdoin; as well as his nieces Julia Edgerton of Boston and Elizabeth Edgerton of Philadelphia.
