The Elementary School at Chewonki excited to start the new school year with a wonderful team of teachers. Welcome back to our new and returning faculty:
Kat Cassidy, Head of Elementary School for Teaching, Learning, and Community; Grades 4/5/6 Teacher
Kat holds a Master’s Degree in Elementary Education from Antioch University New England and is a graduate of Hampshire College and Northfield Mount Hermon School. She began her place-based education career when the term had barely even been coined, when she returned to Northfield Mount Hermon to teach a sustainable agriculture class.
Emily Bell-Hoerth, Grades 4/5/6 Teacher
Emily joined the faculty in our pilot year. She served as a teaching assistant for two years, and most recently as our grades 3/4 teacher in the 2017-2018 school year. She has been an amazing teacher and role model for our students, and we are delighted that she will be team teaching with Kat Cassidy in the coming school year.
Annie Nixon, Grades 7/8 Teacher
Annie is a certified Waldorf Teacher who taught middle school for five years at both the Maine Coast Waldorf School and Ashwood Waldorf School. She has experience teaching all middle school academic subjects, and integrating them authentically through rigorous project-based learning both in and out of the classroom.
Coreysha Stone, Teaching Assistant, Visual Arts Specialist
Coreysha Stone is an educator and artist exploring ecological systems-based education and expression. Coreysha received her Master of Arts in Teaching from Maine College of Art for K-12 Art Education and holds her Maine state teacher certification. She received her Associates Degree in Applied Science for Occupational Therapy and has provided early intervention/school-based services in both rural and urban settings. Coreysha’s Bachelor Degree is in Human Ecology from College of the Atlantic, where she focused in fine art and natural sciences.
Drew Perlmutter, Teaching Assistant
Drew is a recent graduate from Bates College with a degree in Environmental Studies with a concentration in Ecology. Her passion for environmental and experiential learning began during the fall of 2012 at Maine Coast Semester when she was introduced to the importance of place-based curriculum. Drew’s experience as an educator began during the summer of 2016 during her internship at Vaughan Woods and Historic Homestead and continued during the summer of 2017 at the Kennebec Land Trust.
