As we close another school year, many of our faculty depart from Chewonki Neck in pursuit of travel, adventure, restoration, rest, and much-needed time with family & friends. For some, this departure will also mark the end of their time as a faculty member as they shift to new homes, new jobs, and even retirement.
Please join us in offering a hearty thank you and fond farewell to those who won’t return in the fall. Readers are invited to share messages of farewell below.
Susan Feibelman
Vice President of Schools and Health Services
Susan has been on our faculty since November 2016, but her relationship with Chewonki began much earlier. As head of school at Packer Collegiate Institute, she strongly advocated for semester programs and eventually became a two-time semester parent herself. Before serving on our faculty and leadership team, Susan was also a semester school advisory committee member. She plans to retire and is looking forward to spending more time with her children and grandchildren.
Sue West
Semester Art Faculty
Sue West first began working at Chewonki in 1980 and is a founding faculty member of Maine Coast Semester. During her forty-year career, she has served Chewonki in many capacities and is perhaps best known as a semester art teacher. Sue is looking forward to retirement, spending more time doing the many things she loves, and finding ways to continue learning and connecting with young people.
Pete Sniffen
Semester Science Faculty
Pete first came to Chewonki in 2008 as a teaching fellow and spent the next decade teaching natural history and environmental issues. We wish Pete the best in his new role at the Hartsbrook School in Hadley, Massachusetts, where he’ll teach geology and sustainability.
Eric McIntyre
Semester Science Faculty
Eric came to Chewonki four years ago as a summer trip leader and stayed on as a teaching fellow. After his fellowship ended, Eric joined our science faculty to teach Natural History of the Maine Coast. He plans to stay in the area and continue working at the intersection of natural history, craft, and education.
Otis Wortley
Semester Spanish Faculty
Originally from North Yarmouth, Otis first came to Chewonki as a semester student (semester 39) and returned in 2018 as our Spanish language teacher. Otis is leaving Chewonki to work full-time at his high school alma mater, Waynflete, in Portland.
Bob Bennett
Semester Teaching Fellow
Bob first came to Chewonki two years ago as an outdoor classroom educator and Camp Chewonki trip leader. He has been a teaching fellow for the last year. He plans to return to Cape Cod this summer to work on a farm and at a beach. Bob is looking forward to staying connected to Chewonki and hopes to return in the future.
