Three weeks into the semester, student blog entries on the Semester’s “To the Point” blog are ripe with mention of the farm and food system here at Chewonki. Between morning chores, afternoon work programs, Wednesday Sustainability classes, and weekend activities, students have been all over the farm and accomplishing much.
In “Keeping Up with Semester 53,” Natalie and Sophie W. chronicle a myriad of intersections with the farm, from drinking milk to a recent work program of removing tomato plants from the high tunnel.
Minta reflected on her personal experience of aiding one of our Maintenance crew through a “Turkey Slaughter.” Unfortunately, we cannot legally slaughter our own birds on campus at this time, though we are hoping to build the infrastructure necessary to support on on-farm poultry processing exemption for Chewonki.
“Homesteading Weekend at Chewonki” by Lambeth is the story of a full and fabulous Saturday morning of spoon carving, fiber arts, plant identification, basket weaving, lip balm making, and food preservation.
And, finally, afternoon work programs are fodder for excellent reflections in “Chewonki: From the Eyes of a Younger Sibling” (written by Diana) and “Friday Afternoon Work Program: A Photo Essay” (written by Marcus, Elsie P, and Jennie).
Thanks to all our Semester 53 bloggers. Keep checking back both “To the Point” and “Chew on This” for more news!
