It’s shaping up to be quite a summer at Big Eddy, with the “No Vacancy” board hanging on the hooks below our open sign almost every weekend. Guests, new and old, old and young, are finding refuge and respite on the banks of West Branch- fishing, camping, hiking, and simply enjoying a little time away. After the past year and a half, taking time to disconnect is as necessary as ever, and we take great pride in offering the perfect setting to do so. And, after last season’s limited opening, we are so enjoying catching up with everyone, too.
“But, how’s the fishing?” you ask. Each fishing season ebbs and flows, and this year is no different. The May Henrickson hatch got off to an earlier start than usual, most likely due to a mixture of warm temperatures and low run-off this spring. The much-anticipated Caddis hatch in June may not have been as bountiful as in past years, but we heard reports of a few nice brook trout and salmon being hooked by diligent anglers. As the river temperature warms, we expect the fishing activity to back off a little over the next handful of weeks, but there’s still plenty of time to get out on the river and enjoy its beautiful scenery.
If you’re still thinking about coming up this season, our cabins are all officially back on the reservation calendar, as are our riverside tent sites (which are getting snatched up like hot cakes!). So take a look at our site sooner than later if you’re interested, or email us at bigeddy@chewonki.org.
Last but not least, we are continually making improvements and upgrades. Big Eddy is entirely off the grid (which our campers love!), and this spring, we replaced our old battery bank. This update is much appreciated by all, as it dramatically reduced the time we need to run our generator. We also completed a repair project on our boat launch, which now offers a smoother ride to vehicles and boat trailers. With more projects on the horizon, we started the Big Eddy Improvement Fund and would be honored if you can donate.
Thanks for your attention, kind reader, and we look forward to seeing you at camp soon!
