Every moment at Chewonki offers a chance for growth, connection, and discovery. From polar bear plunges to caring for farm animals, our students and campers take away meaningful gifts—curiosity, resilience, and inspiration—that last a lifetime.
This November and December, we’re celebrating the gifts of outdoor education with stories from our community. Want to share yours? Email Alexis Grillo at agrillo@chewonki.org.
The Gift of Lizard Time
When most people think of summer camp, they imagine bunk beds, capture the flag, and campfire songs. At Chewonki, those traditions thrive—but there’s also something simpler, quieter, and equally cherished: lizard time.
Katie Malek, Associate Director of Girls Camp, describes it best:
“Lizard time is when you lay in the grass or on a rock—or anywhere in nature—and read, braid each other’s hair, bird-watch, or just soak up the sunshine. It started as something counselors did during staff orientation, but now it’s a favorite free-choice activity for campers too.”
Lizard time began as a way for staff to recharge during busy days, but it quickly became a beloved ritual shared by the entire Chewonki community. Whether lying in the warm grass or perched on a sunlit rock, campers and staff alike embrace these moments to unwind, reflect, and connect with the world around them.
Katie sees lizard time as more than just a pause. It’s a reminder of the importance of being fully present. “It’s so encouraging to see campers and staff take these moments to connect with nature and each other,” she says. For Katie, lizard time embodies the gifts of Outdoor Education: the ability to slow down, notice the beauty around you, and build meaningful relationships in a supportive community.
Chewonki’s unique setting on Chewonki Neck enhances the impact of lizard time. Surrounded by fields, forests, and coastal vistas, it’s easy to feel a deep sense of gratitude for the natural world. But as Katie points out, the gift of lizard time doesn’t have to stay on Chewonki Neck. “It’s a mindset you can take home,” she shares. “Lizard time can happen anywhere—a backyard, a park, or even a sunny spot on the floor.”
In a world that often feels too fast-paced, lizard time offers a rare chance to pause, recharge, and savor the moment. It’s a simple ritual, but one that carries profound meaning. For Katie, lizard time reflects everything that makes Chewonki special: the beauty of the land, the strength of the community, and the joy of finding connection in unexpected ways.
“Lizard time reminds me how special this place and its people are,” Katie reflects. “It’s a gift we give ourselves and one another.”
Thank you for sharing, Katie! Chewonki’s ‘lizard time’ offers a precious chance to pause, connect, and cherish the natural world—a gift our campers carry with them for life. With your support, we can ensure these moments remain part of Chewonki’s ethos for generations to come. Let’s keep these traditions thriving.
