Chewonki students and staff enjoyed a special treat on March 19: a private concert by the Vassar College Night Owls, a fabulous all-female a cappella group.
Their smooth harmonies and energetic style captivated young and old. After their performance, they led a music workshop for students in the Elementary School at Chewonki (the younger singers’ musical acumen impressed their college counterparts). They also met a kindred spirit while they were here: Sparky, our great horned owl, arrived on the arm of Traveling Natural History Program Coordinator Emma Balazs.
The Night Owls, one of the country’s oldest collegiate singing ensembles, were touring the Northeast during their spring break. Lily Kitfield-Vernon (Vassar ‘18) directs the group, and she knew about Chewonki from her grandparents (who live on nearby Westport Island) and cousins Cormac Feeley (Boys Camp ‘11-’15; Wilderness Trips ‘16,’17) and and Margaret Feeley (Girls Camp ‘16,’17).
We are so grateful that the Night Owls made time to alight on Chewonki Neck. We hope they’ll migrate back someday!
