Over time Chewonki has secured ownership — through the generosity of donors or by acquisition — to eight beautiful islands along the Maine coast. These undeveloped sites provide our participants, particularly our sailors, sea kayakers and salt water canoeists, with a rare and special opportunity to experience uninhabited portions of the Maine Coast.
- Castle and Berry islands, a short paddle from the Chewonki waterfront in Hockomock Bay, were donated to Chewonki in 1986.
- Huckleberry Island in the Sheepscot River north of the town of Wiscasset was donated in 1992.
- Bowline Head Island located in Pleasant Bay, downeast of Mt. Desert, was acquired in 2003.
- In August 2006, Chewonki became the proud owner of four additional undeveloped islands, extending from Mid-Coast Maine all the way to Penobscot Bay. The islands are Russ Island off Stonington, Campbell Island off Deer Isle, Hungry and Black island in Muscongus Bay.
