Thanks to the sheep on our farm, the fiber arts have have always had a warm, snuggly, place here at Chewonki. With the wool grown, shorn, carded, spun, and dyed right on site, many students and campers have their first lesson in knitting, crocheting, felting, and/or weaving while attending a program here, and it’s not uncommon to see our students or staff happily knitting away while attending a meeting or class.

With so many delightful entanglements going on, we were bound to love this wonderful write-up about Maine Coast Semester alumni Lily Feinberg (MCS 57) and her wildly popular @knithappens__ instagram page in the James Lane Post. (You can read the article here.)

With more than 27,000 followers and millions of views for her knitting page, Lily sure has got a lot of skein in the game! We reached out to Lily to asked her to spin us a yarn about how she got hooked. Lily writes:

“I learned to knit in one of my very first days at Chewonki. I was a member of semester 57, and I still remember setting a goal for the semester to knit 4 hats, one for each of my family members. I had no idea how much more I would accomplish that semester, both in the realm of knitting and beyond.

Knitting was a massive part of my semester’s culture. Especially while we were detoxing from having our phones in our hands 24/7, knitting proved to be the perfect alternative. I would knit through classes, during meals, and in the evenings on those green couches, smushed up against friends.

I learned so much during my 4 months at Chewonki, but knitting is by far the thing I learned that changed my life the most. I am so grateful for Chewonki for giving me the gift of knitting, among so many other gifts that I still keep with me to this day!”

February is also sheep-shearing season at Chewonki and needles to say, weave been looking forward to newest batch of wool to start some new projects!
