We received some terribly sad news this week about the Elmer family from Fort Fairfield, Maine. Three members of the household died in a house fire, early in the morning on Thursday, November 2nd.
A full report of the tragedy can be found online in the Bangor Daily News.
Augustus Elmer joined us this past summer for Chewonki’s Coastal Ecology Kayak Expedition (pictured above, far right, bottom row) and was the only member of the household to survive the fire.
We have been in touch with the guidance department from Augustus’ school and working to see what kinds of support we can provide. From what we’ve heard, Augustus will be staying with his other sister who lives in the southwest part of the country.
This is a terrible loss, and we are all sending our best thoughts and care.
If you would like to help provide support for Augustus in this difficult time, his cousin has established a GoFundMe page to help cover clothing, food, therapy funeral and memorial services, relocation costs and more.
If you would like to send in a note of support for Augustus, please email it to the Camp Chewonki office and we will relay it to his family.
Thank you.
