Two students in Chewonki Elementary & Middle School have been named state winners in the National Junior Duck Stamp Contest, sponsored by U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
Julien and Lilly Mae were selected as the Maine state winners for the 5th and 6th-grade categories and will be invited to an awards ceremony hosted by LL Bean later this spring.
“I would like to take a moment to appreciate every student that submitted work for this completion,” says Chewonki’s visual arts specialist Coreysha Stone. “Each artist embraced the studio habits, especially to stretch and explore, take risks, and learn from mistakes. Each student ought to feel very proud for their process and their product.”
Both images will now be considered for the National Duck Stamp competition and join a nation-wide traveling exhibit of other winning entries.
According to National Fish and Wildlife Services, the winning artwork from the national art contest serves as the design for the Junior Duck Stamp, which the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service produces annually. This $5 stamp has become a much sought after collector’s item. One hundred percent of the revenue from the sale of Junior Duck stamps goes to support recognition and environmental education activities for students who participate in the program.
