The fourth estate is alive and well at Camp Chewonki thanks to an abundance of talented young journalists eager to keep this community well informed and entertained. The Session I Chewonki Chronicle is 22 pages of photos and stories, including snapshots of all activities: archery, art, boating, Challenge Course, farm, field sports, nature, Outdoor Living Skills, pottery, swimming, sustainability, tennis, Traveling Natural History Program, and woodworking. An imaginative essay probing the meaning and possible location of a mythical “Counselor Mansion” on Chewonki Neck; an interview with new Boys Camp Director Charlie Fear; a comic strip; appreciation for members of the camp family; and thoughtful descriptions of Packout are a few of the other assets in this issue.
There is also a section called “Best of the New Hall Gazette,” a compilation of feature articles from the start-up publication founded in 2018 by Leo, a Heron camper. Leo lived in New Hall last year, when he started the gazette, and resides this year in Binnacle. Leo’s lively newspaper has attracted a great deal of positive attention, so Chronicle leaders did what many a shrewd media moguls is doing these days: they invited Leo to join the staff. He accepted, although he maintains a decidedly independent voice.
Folding New Hall Gazette highlights in the Chronicle makes this venerable camp publication more interesting than ever. Congratulations to all the reporters, photographers, editors, and designers who create this not-to-be-missed publication, and important part of Camp Chewonki since its founding.
