Though we’ve been under and without snow off and on all winter, the seedlings (onions! flowers! microgreens! eggplants!) under grow lights in the basement of the Gatehouse are happily germinating. Hello, March! Our tired old greenhouse got a remodel in December when local contractors pushed out one wall by about two feet and replaced old not-quite-so-transparent-anymore panels. Though we didn’t gain all that much in floor space, the longer panels allow for three shelves instead of just two on the slanted side, and we’ll have additional growing space in the back of the greenhouse. What looked like this:
Now looks like this:
Quite literally, we’ll need to wear sunglasses when we water seedlings all spring. Such brightness!
Meanwhile, the onions are started under grow lights in the basement, but today moved into the new greenhouse space. The exhaust fan has been pumping heat out of the greenhouse since 10:00 this morning, meaning that it was already 80 degrees inside despite the freezing temperatures outside. We’re looking forward to improved growth and increased capacity for seedlings.
Here’s one last set of photos, taken during a February blizzard, when a cornice developed off the new greenhouse and almost completely blocked the front door to the Gatehouse.
