Nestled along the island-studded mid-coast of Maine, Chewonki is more than just a summer camp—it’s a place where kids grow, explore, and discover their connection to the natural world, and each summer, campers arrive ready to hike, paddle, and challenge themselves in new ways. At the heart of it all, two of the most beloved and exciting spots in camp are Oxbow Waterfront and Hoyt’s Waterfront, our two swimming areas.

Whether it’s a camper jumping off the dock for the first time, launching a canoeing adventure through the estuary, or a group learning to navigate the tides in sea-kayaks, the lifeguards at Chewonki play a crucial role in creating an unforgettable summer experience.

The Murk & Magic of Hockomock Bay

Unlike a typical swimming area in a lake or pool, Chewonki’s waterfront is set in a saltwater estuary, where the fresh and saltwater mix creates an environment teeming with life. The tides shift throughout the day, rising and falling by more than 9′ each time. The incoming tide can be quite chilly with clear, cold, ocean water streaming in from the Atlantic, while the outgoing tide can reach bathtub-like temperatures after warming in the estuary under the summer sun, and the water takes on rich muddy hues from the sediments picked up from Montsweag Brook.

The challenges? Saltwater stings the eyes a little more than a lake, the tides and currents require careful attention from our staff, and swimming in the ocean can feel more intimidating for first-timers.

The benefits? A chance to revel in the life-rich ecosystem, the occasional friendly harbor seal or osprey sighting, and a place where campers can swim and explore marine life up close. There’s nothing quite like watching kids splash and marvel at the horseshoe crabs found along the shore of Chewonki Neck, or learn the power of the tide as they navigate its gentle pull.

As Camp Director Katie Goodman puts it: “I think the waterfronts are the spots in camp with so much pure joy. But also a space where many kids are in their challenge zone, so lifeguards play an integral role in making campers feel safe and confident to try a new thing or be in a spot they aren’t normally. Like the balance between it being a super fun, easy space for some campers, and for others, you get to support them in a big growth moment.”

The Lifeguard Experience: Keep ’em Safe and Smiling

Being a lifeguard at Chewonki is about more than watching the water—it’s about helping kids gain confidence, face their fears, and experience pure joy. One moment, you might be cheering on a camper who’s hesitant to jump off the dock. The next, you’re teaching paddling skills or helping a group learn how to rescue an overturned canoe.

It’s a job filled with responsibility, but also an incredible amount of fun. Every day brings new adventures—whether it’s an early morning Polar Bear Swim, a lazy canoe paddle around the points, or just a spontaneous round of synchronized dock jumps with a group of excited campers.

Becoming a Lifeguard: A Challenge Worth Taking

Taking the Chewonki lifeguard training course as a young adult is no small feat. The course pushes you to build endurance, master rescue techniques, and learn critical first aid skills. It’s physically demanding, but also incredibly rewarding. You gain real-world emergency skills, grow your leadership abilities, your communication and group management skills, and develop a deep sense of confidence—all while preparing for a summer filled with adventure.

The best part of becoming a lifeguard? You get to work with kids, build strong friendships with fellow staff, and spend your days by the water in one of the most beautiful places in Maine.
