What To Expect On Opening Day
Session I – all programs: June 28 12:30 pm – 3:30 pm
Greetings! We are very excited for your arrival on Tuesday, June 28th.
We want to make your child’s first day as smooth and fun as possible.
Chewonki will be busy with over 200 campers arriving but we know you will feel welcomed.
DROP OFF: 12:30 – 3:30. Please note this new timing. Thank you for not arriving before 12:30. Should this timing present a hardship, please contact Leslie Hunter. Be sure to have a healthy lunch before arriving. There are many great local establishments to grab a bite to eat before arriving.
PARTICIPANTS TRAVELING ALONE. We are dedicated to making your child’s transition from home to Chewonki as seamless as possible. Please refer to our Arrival and Departure Info sheet for details on shuttle services. Do not hesitate to contact Leslie Hunter if you have any questions regarding transportation.
CHECKING IN: We will have greeters ready to connect you and your family with counselors and trip leaders. After parking your car, we’ll help you with your gear and point you towards a check-in table where you’ll have a chance to say hello to the director. We’ll have separate check-ins for Adventures for Girls, Wilderness Trips and Camp for Boys. At this time, we will let you know if there are any outstanding details or paperwork.
HEALTH CENTER: Some participants and their families may need to meet with our health center nurses and staff to follow up on form submission or with specific questions. Medications should be dropped off at this time.
MEETING THE GROUP: From here, we’ll connect your child with their trip or cabin groups. This is a valuable time to get to know your child’s leaders. The leaders will be prepared to offer program-specific details. This is also a time to share any insights about your child that will make their experience successful.
SETTLING IN: For families with children in the Camp for Boys program, it’s appropriate to take a little time to unpack belongings. Beds will be assigned in advance so there is no need to rush to cabins. Unpacking will be facilitated by the counselors. From here, the leaders will look to integrate your child into the program with a variety of activities.
SAYING GOODBYE: After taking time to help your child meet their group and counselors/trip leaders as well as taking care of any needed details, it’s really time to say goodbye with a message of confidence and success. After saying goodbye, please stop in to our parent & family lounge in Chapin Hall for snacks and refreshments before hitting the road. We will also be offering a brief new family welcome and orientation at 2:30. This is a chance to get to know a few other families, meet our directors, and hear their advice on supporting your child while at Chewonki for the first time.
We hope this information has been helpful! Please be in touch with any questions.
