In the roiling world of post-presidential-election politics and journalism, Jane Spencer (Maine Coast Semester 10) is not flinching from the fight around national park designations. Spencer is a deputy editor of the U.S. edition of the Guardian, which just launched a new investigative series on current threats to America’s public lands.
Among the public lands under review by the federal government is Maine’s new Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument, which encompasses 87,500 acres in the heart of the North Woods. Chewonki frequently sends sends wilderness trip groups to the region, which is adjacent to Baxter State Park.
The Guardian has also invited readers to raise $50,000 to fund in-depth research for the series, called “This Land Is Your Land.” The kick-off came June 5 with a story about the possibility that uranium mining will be reopened in Grand Canyon National Park (story on the threat to the Grand Canyon from uranium mining).
