Katharina Harling, an alumna of Maine Coast Semester 48, received a prestigious Fulbright award in May, just before her graduation from Bates College. Kat pursued a double major in English and rhetoric at Bates. She will spend a year as an English teaching assistant in Taiwan. The Fulbright U.S. Student Program supports outstanding young Americans interested in intercultural exchange and understanding around the world.
Kat grew up in Long Island City, New York, and came to Chewonki from the Brearley School in New York City. While she was at Chewonki, she studied Chinese; afterward, traveled to China. In her final report, Kat’s advisor wrote that she seemed “open to new friendships, experiences, and learning…You learn and teach wherever you might be…Full immersion seems to be…your life motto.” The Fulbright grant will allow Kat to continue to pursue new personal and intellectual adventures. Many congratulations to her!
