Camp Chewonki is a nature-based overnight camp and expedition-based youth leadership program for boys, girls, and non-binary children. Overnight campers are aged 8-15 and spend 10 days or 3 weeks at camp. The overnight camp program focuses on building cabin community, building skills and knowledge in a core curriculum, and learning about backcountry travel on multi-day remote cabin trips. Participants in our Leadership Expeditions are aged 14-18 and spend 3 weeks or 5 weeks learning leadership skills, remote travel, and a robust sense of self. 

The Waterfront Coordinator is a member of the camp coordinator team and is responsible for overseeing the day to day operation of the camp waterfront. The Waterfront Coordinator serves as a mentor and supervisor to Chewonki’s waterfront staff, providing support for nearly all aspects of their jobs including managing the logistics, safety, and equipment of the waterfront, as well as supporting the planning, preparation, and implementation of the activity curriculum. Specifically, the Waterfront Coordinator supports the work of lifeguards and watercraft instructors. The Waterfront Coordinator is expected to support the growth and development of all activity staff in attaining their personal best as an educator, caretaker, and employee.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Uphold the Chewonki Foundation’s mission and values

    • Learn and uphold Wilderness Protocols as set forth by Chewonki
  • Be an active member of the Chewonki community; e.g. participate in camp set up and take down 
  • Conduct daily check-ins with waterfront staff and provide support as needed
  • Coordinate waterfront scheduling, equipment, and lifeguard coverage
  • Lead and support watercraft instruction at the waterfront
  • Perform observations and provide feedback to waterfront staff to support staff development
  • Meet with other Coordinator Team members to discuss and address camp concerns
  • Hold responsibility for physical, mental and emotional wellbeing of participants; this includes:
    • Develop healthy and appropriate relationships with participants
    • Assist activity staff with inspection of activity space for hazards and ensure activity heads are enforcing all safety protocols
    • Manage risk and maintaining the safety of participants
    • Provide direct supervision of participants as assigned
  • Practice professional presentation and communication with participants’ families, co-workers, and the public
  • Facilitate staff mentor/mentee group to support staff development
  • Complete all necessary paperwork, i.e. incident reports, camper reports, trip reports
  • Instill joy and enthusiasm into the daily life of camp

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Be an active member of the Chewonki community; e.g. participate in camp set up and take down
  • Work with program director to schedule and facilitate start and end of session events (e.g. – health and swim checks, campus orientation, banquet)
  • Collaborate to plan and facilitate special events (e.g. – evening events, weekly events, once a session events)
  • Oversee the Polar Bear program – schedule lifeguards, track participation, award patches

  • Risk Management: Having an understanding of how to effectively manage risk on an open waterfront is essential for this role. Waterfront Coordinators are constantly assessing, managing, and preventing risk to ensure the safety of campers. When coordinating activities at the waterfront, Waterfront Coordinators must manage the risks associated with swimming, boating, on a tidal river, as well as supporting staff and campers of all ages and ability levels.
  • Interpersonal: Effective communication with peers and participants is a critical skill in this role. We are looking for leaders who can give, receive, and integrate feedback. Clear and concise communication is required to effectively train and orient activity staff who work at the waterfront.
  • Technical: Having experience lifeguarding and working on open water is key for this role. We are looking for individuals who have boating skills (canoes, kayaks), swimming and lifeguarding skills. Being able to work collaboratively using tools like Google Drive is important for any member of the coordinator team. Good candidates will also be able to keep themselves and the waterfront organized.
  • Educational and Leadership: We are looking for leaders who have experience in education, whether in a formal academic setting, outdoor education, or other educational settings. We value leaders who embody enthusiasm, flexibility, patience, organization, and compassion. This role requires an individual who understands the balance of fun and hands-on learning we strive for at Camp Chewonki. Waterfront Coordinators must also demonstrate effective leadership of all waterfront staff, ensuring safety at all times. 

PREREQUISITES:

  • Experience working in educational spaces, preferred
  • At Least 21 years old to drive participants
  • Current Wilderness First Aid Certification (Chewonki will offer course prior to camp season)
  • Current Lifeguard Certification (Chewonki will offer course prior to camp season)
  • Current Lifeguard Instructor Certification, preferred
  • Valid driver’s license and driving record approved by Chewonki’s Insurance Carrier
  • Must Pass Criminal Background Check

REQUISITES: 

  • Attend Staff Training per Employment Agreement
  • Attend Waterfront Orientation and Activity Specific Training, including use of motor boats
  • Attend Driver’s Training, as necessary

APPROXIMATE 2021 DATES AND SALARY RANGE:

Position Start Date: June 12, 2021
Position End Date: August 16, 2021

Starting Salary: $3,875 (salary increases with increased experience)
