This full-time, year-round position supervises the activity of the health center, which is considered a resource shared by Chewonki programs. The Supervising Nurse is responsible for leadership of the health center; overseeing the health and wellness of participants, operations, risk management, compliance, personnel, and professional development within the Health Center team. The Supervising Nurse is responsible (in collaboration with program leaders) for overseeing all physical and mental health care relating to the Chewonki Foundation, its programs, and its satellite sites.  The Supervising Nurse acts under the guidance of their own nursing license as a registered nurse (RN) and reports to the Director of Operations for the purpose of coordinating all program-related items. For medical supervision, the Supervising Nurse operates under the standing orders set by the local consulting physician(s).

OBJECTIVES

  • Advise, assist, or support Chewonki program leaders in supporting the health and wellness of all participants.
  • Oversee day-to-day operations of the Health Center
  • Maintain best practices regarding camp and school health care and risk management standards
  • Uphold the most current legal requirements for healthcare in all programs 
  • Lead and support a cohesive and communicative Health Center team

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

Health and Wellness of Participants

  • Monitor the physical and mental health and wellness of Chewonki program participants using Maine State Board of Nursing guidelines and consulting the overseeing physician and mental health coordinator as necessary. 
  • Coordinate with program directors regarding healthcare issues within their programs
  • Oversee the effective communication and continuity of care of participants by the Health Center, including maintaining relationships with outside mental health providers as needed
  • Be available to treat routine injuries and illness, delegate first aid and medication administration to staff, and access advice or treatment for injuries and illness beyond a nurse’s scope of practice
  • Screen health forms of all Chewonki program participants and coordinate/communicate with parents, program administrators, and/or sending schools on health issues
  • Update and implement educational training and orientation for Chewonki participants and staff
  • Oversee medication administration and the use of first aid kits by staff
  • Report work-related injuries to Human Resources Department within 24 hours of the occurrence
  • Assess and assist with workers compensation issues and make medical follow up referrals as needed
  • Assist in writing and executing a health and wellness curriculum for school year participants
  • Promote wellness among Chewonki participants and staff through education, with an emphasis on a wholesome diet, exercise, and an overall balanced lifestyle


Health Center Operations

  • Update, maintain, and make program-informed improvements to all written physical and mental health care protocols and procedures 
  • Hire, train, schedule and supervise all Health Center staff
  • Maintain regular office and clinic hours
  • Oversee and manage the operating budget of the Health Center
  • Oversee and manage databases used for storing and organizing participant data
  • Ensure the Health Center is stocked and set up for ease of participant care
  • Coordinate and ensure nurse on-call availability when participants are on campus or in session 
  • Oversee and maintain Health Center use of electronic documentation systems
  • Oversee and maintain sick rooms used by the Health Center
  • Coordinate communication with and participant transportation to local medical professionals 


Risk Management and Compliance

  • Uphold health care and risk management standards
  • Monitor the storage of medicine and equipment as required by law
  • Ensure the Health Center meets compliance with Maine DHS, ACA, and Maine DOE
  • Oversee the maintenance and confidentiality of health care records for both participants and staff
  • Complete student examinations (hearing and vision screenings) and annual documentation and health survey as required by Maine DOE
  • Work with Chewonki’s safety officer to proactively engage with outside medical and emergency personnel regarding communications and transportation in an emergency situation 
  • Participate in Chewonki emergency procedures scenarios and trainings as needed


Personnel and Professional Development

  • Conduct regular Health Center team meetings and individual check-ins to provide timely feedback to all Health Center staff, emphasizing communication, flexibility, and respect for others
  • Complete and deliver yearly performance reviews of Health Center staff and end-of-the-season reviews for seasonal staff in accordance with Chewonki policy
  • Seek out professional development opportunities for members of the Health Center team
  • Stay abreast of health care issues through continuing education and memberships with camp and school nursing organizations e.g. The Independent School Health Association, National Association of School Nurses and the American Camp Nurses.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Participate as a member of the Chewonki Risk Management Committee
  • Participate as a member of Crisis Management Team
  • Lead health care team meetings with school leaders
  • Contribute to the Chewonki community through participation in special projects, community work days, transition tasks, and events

REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS 

  • Current license (in good standing) with the Maine State Board of Nursing
  • Current BLS for Healthcare provider certification
  • Wilderness First Responder certification (required to be obtained within 12 months of hire)
  • CPR instructor certification (required to be obtained within 12 months of hire)
