The Counselor-in-Training Coordinator (CIT Coordinator) is a member of the camp coordinator team and is responsible for planning and implementing Camp Chewonki’s CIT program. Camp Chewonki requires a highly motivated and well trained staff to deliver a rigorous and engaging curriculum. The CIT program is a critical pipeline for providing top candidates for positions across the summer staff and beyond. The CIT Coordinators will work together to plan a progression for the summer that trains CITs to deliver Chewonki’s mission (growth, nature, community), collaborate with peers to educate and care for participants, and prepare for and lead a safe and successful wilderness trip. The CIT Coordinator is expected to support the growth and development of all CITs in attaining their personal best as an educator, caretaker, and future employees.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
- Uphold the Chewonki Foundation’s mission and values
- Learn and uphold Chewonki Protocols as stated in Camp Chewonki Staff Handbook
- Learn and uphold Wilderness Protocols as set forth by Chewonki
- Participate in Leader of the Day (LoD) rotation to ensure camp schedule runs smoothly
- Ring bells, run mealtime procedure, communicate with health center, review end of day staff reports to coordinate timely and appropriate follow up, among other duties
- Collaborate with fellow CIT Coordinators to plan and deliver lessons and workshops
- Topics include: delivering the mission, leadership & collaboration, community development, group & behavior management, teaching techniques, wilderness trip leading skills
- Plan and prepare for assigned trip; this includes:
- Teaching and overseeing CIT role in planning and preparation
- Finalize itinerary and potential resupply dates
- Pack food and gear
- Familiarize self with potential evacuation locations and scenarios
- Reach out to students prior to departure
- Hold responsibility for physical, mental and emotional wellbeing of participants; this includes:
- Develop healthy and appropriate relationships with participants
- Support participants through the transition from participant to staff member
- Manage risk and maintaining the safety of participants
- Provide direct supervision of participants as assigned
- Practice professional presentation and communication with participants’ families, co-workers, and the public
- Complete all necessary paperwork, i.e. incident reports, camper reports, trip reports
- Instill joy and enthusiasm into the daily life of camp
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
- Be an active member of the Chewonki community; e.g. participate in camp set up and take down
- Provide updates and final assessment of each CITs appropriateness for employment
- Plan special opportunities to interact with and learn from various members of the year round and seasonal staff – past examples include meeting with the President of Chewonki
- Coordinate CIT down time – including involvement in camp activities, evening activities, and off day excursions
PREREQUISITES:
- Experience working in educational spaces, preferred
- At Least 21 years old
- Current Wilderness First Responder Certification (preferred certifying bodies are Wilderness Medical Associates and Wilderness Medical Institute)
- Current Lifeguard Certification, preferred
- Valid driver’s license and driving record approved by Chewonki’s Insurance Carrier
- Must Pass Background Check
REQUISITES:
- Maine State Trip Leader Permit
- Attend Staff Training per Employment Agreement
- Attend Driver’s Training, as necessary
- Small Craft Safety for Water Based Trip Leaders
