We are very excited for summer at Chewonki to officially begin! Opening day for Session 1 is Tuesday, June 27.
We want to make your child’s first day at camp as smooth and fun as possible. With over 200 campers arriving, we have a couple of reminders to make the day a success.
Drop Off Time
After parking your car, we’ll help you move your gear to a check-in table where you’ll have a chance to say hello to the Camp Director. We will have separate check-in stations for Camp Chewonki for Girls, Wilderness Trips and Camp Chewonki for Boys. We will let you know if there are any outstanding registration details or paperwork at that time.
Meet Your Cabin or Trip Group
This is a valuable time to get to know your child’s counselors and trip leaders. They will be prepared to share program-specific details with you and answer any questions about camp life. This is also a good time to share any tips or insights that will help them create a successful experience for your child.
Get Your Camper Settled In
Some participants and their families may also need to meet with our health center staff to follow up on specific questions, or to drop off medication. For families with younger children, it’s appropriate to take a little time to help the camper unpack belongings and make their personal area feel cozy. Beds are assigned in advance, so there is no need to rush to cabins. Unpacking will be facilitated by the cabin counselors.
Once you’re unpacked, the staff leaders will look to invite your child into the program with a variety of fun activities.
Give them a Hug and Start Their Adventure!
Now that you have met the staff and helped your camper unpack, it’s time to say goodbye. Families should resist the temptation to linger, as this can make it harder for your child to switch gears. Our staff may offer you a subtle cue that your child is “all set” and ready to join other activities. Your confidence will set the tone of success for your child. Don’t worry! It’s normal to feel a little anxiety at this moment. We have over 103 years of successful summers, and your camper will be launched into new friendships and activities before you reach the end of the camp road.
After saying goodbye, please stop in to our parent & family lounge in the Center for Environmental Education for refreshments before hitting the road. There will be a brief New Family welcome and orientation at 2:30. This is a chance for you to get to know a few other families, meet our Camp Directors, and hear their advice on supporting your child while at Chewonki for the first time.
We hope this information has been helpful! Please be in touch with any questions.
SEE YOU SOON!
