It’s that time of the year: the peak of summer! We know because the Chewonki daylily, a blazing red variety created by the late Joseph Barth of Alna, Maine, is blooming brightly below the Camp Chewonki office in the Farmhouse.
We don’t know for sure why Barth, a renowned daylily hybridizer, created this beauty and named it Chewonki; maybe because of his friendship with healthcare director Margaret Ellis, maybe because his son Joe was once a counselor here, or maybe simply because he believed in the Chewonki mission.
In any case, it’s a beautiful reminder that summer is a wonderful thing in Maine – brief and beautiful!
