Once again, friends of the late Margaret Ellis, who died in 2011, gathered on a beautiful June morning to work in the perennial beds that she loved. An endowment created by her family and devoted friends pays for ongoing maintenance of the beds but there is always more work to do than the talented Sandra White, the official gardener, can handle. Margaret, a master gardener, had a deep belief in the educational and personal benefits that come from working with plants and soil. On June 6, the memory of her enthusiasm compelled twenty-five volunteers to weed, prune, and plant and enjoy each other’s company. Among the gardeners were Margaret’s husband, Tim Ellis, as well as all the members of her gardening group, the Ladies of the Dirt. Afterwards, the group enjoyed a five-star gazpacho prepared by Kitchen Manager Bill Edgerton. On hand were: Sheila Sullivan, Jan Slater, Patti Mendes, Tim Ellis, Gordon Shields, Sara Walbridge, Henry Barber, Margy Foulk, Susie Stedman, Margaret Mathis, Willard Morgan (with Sierra and Zella), Bill Edgerton, Lucy Hull, Bart Chapin, Kate Wilkinson, Beth Dilley, Craig Kesselbaum, and Jenn Barton; squatting: Lisa Paige; and sitting: Phine Ewing, Kate Ziminsky; and kneeling Don Hudson. Missing from the photo: Jonathan and Ruth Appleyard, and Charlie Hudson.
